Authority and authorities play an important part in education and religion, especially when education and religion meet or come into conflict with each other. In societal discourses the relation between education and religion in cultures of the Mediterranean area and it´s surroundings is discussed in various aspects. Authority and authorities contribute to the enforcement of truth claims and to the storage, transmission and imparting of religious and educational knowledge. Different types of media come to be regarded; religiously and educationally founded authorities can complement each other or rule each other out. Authority and authorities can be instrumental in the emergence of relevant central debates. The leading question for the annual convention therefore is: How do processes of attribution, fixation and usurpation of authority relate between the poles of education and religion in the cultures examined by the Collaborative Research Centre?
